EMDR Therapy

Life situations can cause hurts to go into the very fiber of our being sometimes. Some of those hurts can be defined as traumas. Whether the trauma is sexual assault, physical or emotional abuse, EMDR may help the past become the past.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach for treating trauma. It is an effective, proven approach.

EMDR Therapy incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches.  It has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.

How does EMDR work?

No one knows how any form of psychotherapy works in the brain. But, we do know that your  brain processes information differently when you are upset.

One moment can become "frozen in time".  Remembering a trauma may feel like going through it the first time because the images, sounds, smells, and feelings haven’t changed. Such memories have a lasting negative effect that interferes with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate to other people.

EMDR Therapy Sessions...

The therapist should see you for one or more therapy sessions to understand the nature of the problem.  Afterwards, they can decide whether EMDR is an appropriate treatment option.  EMDR Therapy may begin if the therapist and client agree that EMDR is appropriate for a specific problem.

A typical EMDR session lasts one session (50 minutes). The number of treatment sessions will depend on the type of problem, life circumstances, and the amount of previous trauma.

EMDR may be standard "talking" therapy as an adjunctive therapy with a separate therapist, or as a treatment all by itself.

This type of therapy is requires specialized training.  Only Licensed Mental Health Clinicians trained by an EMDRIA-approved provider can administer EMDR Therapy.

There may be one or many EMDR sessions with your therapist depending on the situation.  Generally, there are eight phases of treatment: planning, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and re-evaluation.  Some clients progress quickly through each of the phases, so the number of sessions can vary.   There is no a fixed amount of time required to administer EMDR.
